Hiver, Première Neige
oil on birch panel, 24″ x 16″

In December, a light first snow falls overnight, dusting the clear cuts on Mt. Sullivan, and clearly revealing their interesting abstract shapes. As in all my work, as I seek the essence of my subject, I engage in a process of constantly simplifying the natural shapes before me, whatever the subject. Every now and then, as here, the shapes are already abstracted for me, which I find delightful. These clear cuts are a favourite subject, and feature in many of my sketches and paintings of Xwaaqw’um, the Burgoyne Valley.
