Xwaaqw’um XVI
oil on birch panel, 24″ x 36″

Over the last decade I have returned countless times to this subject – Hwmetuts’um (Mt. Maxwell) — and the majesty of her southern flank as viewed from various vantage points in the valley meadows below. Her sphinx-like form, which seems to sail forward through space trailing a scarf of cloud, her crown of firs and the near-geometry of the rocky outcroppings never fail to fascinate me, as do those mysterious evenly-placed rows of what look like holes in the main heptagonal face. All so much fun for painter with a semi-abstract modus operandi! I feel I will sketch and paint this mountain until I fall off my perch, and still not be fully saturated with its power and its charm.
